Making Sense of GMA's SONA

Pinoy Kasi

- Her Sona was her way of saying: "I've survived beyond five years, the normal term the Constitution gives to a President, and I did that against all odds. Moreover, I intend to survive till 2010."

-After the Sona, after "State of War," I thought, sadly, of how Ms Arroyo's promises and praise have further reinforced traditional politics with its horse-trading and bartering. Worse, hounded by her own insecurities, she has chosen to ride the military tiger which she will never be able to dismount, placing herself and the nation in deep peril. Before the end of her term, a mere 1,431 days from now, she may yet have another dubious achievement: reviving Southeast Asia's last communist insurgency.

Learning from the Liberal Times

When I got accepted into the Liberal Times Manila blog and podcasting workshop, part of my acceptance letter read:

"Current Situation of Philippine Blogging - M.L. Quezon III
We should improve on the content of our blogs... It is a medium that should be handled responsibly and not filled with personal stuff that your readers have no use for.."

I agree. You can write about personal things but if, and only if, your readers will find any use for it. What good is it to wear your heart up on your sleeve if not for your selfish display of your internal instability? Need we know about it when we ourselves have all been leading harder lives?

Don't be a brat. Save us from your useless rants.

new rainy day resolution

Don't read blogs that are a sore in the eyes... For example, don't read his blog.. He's too caught up in puddles.. He doesn't need to drag you down..

There... Very good... On to better things..

rainy day precogs

The last time I felt weird, somebody's uncle died. Last night, I think it was about nature. Have you ever experienced what it's like to recognize things before they happen? And I don't mean predicting whether you'll get called for recit or whether that guy likes you back. I mean feeling this rush and discomfort pumping in your veins the way something is about to erupt and claim lives or damage property. This must be how a volcano feels like, or an underwater tidal wave. This is how it feels like to be in the eye of the storm. I hate this.

When I was in college, my Sci10 prof, Dr. Achoot Cueyegkeng, recommended me to a friend in the Psychology Department to rid me of foretelling. It worked well for a time, although that doctor admonished me to see it as a gift rather than an inconvenience. Now, I have recurring weird things going on in my mind. Much as this is a public acknowledgement of precognition, it's also a hypothetical way of driving it away. Let's hope it works.

at kaykee's bday

Mark and I at Pier One :)

Things change. People change. And for some reason, girl fights are never really fully resolved. Girls can be so selfish and possessive of their friends. Well, there's always karma... So long as you know you're doing the right thing, let people hate you. They don't measure much to your non-negotiables...

What's your drinking style?

VIRGO
Drinking style

Cerebral Virgos are compelled to impose order onto their bender. Their famously fussy quest for purity could lead to drinking less than other signs, sure -- but it could also lead to drinking booze neat, to sucking down organic wine or just to brand loyalty. They rarely get fully shellacked -- but, oh, when they do! Virgo's controlled by the intellect, but there's an unbridled beast lurking within, and they let it loose when walloped. It's dead sexy (and surprisingly unsloppy). As one Virgo friend used to declare, "I'm going to drink myself into a low level of intelligence tonight." A toast to the subgenius IQ!

Trademark cocktails

Many Virgos prefer clear, simple, untreacly drinks like vodka tonic or a real margarita, though you'll find 'em drinking anything -- from unflinchingly downing Cuervo straight to smirkingly ordering a dirty virgin. They also tend to like bitter, low-alk guzzles like Campari and soda. They rarely change their drink once they've found it, however.

MPAA to Thwart Pirates By Making All Movies Suck
By G. Lloyd Girty

Los Angeles, CA - Motion Picture Association of America President and CEO Dan Glickman announced a bold new strategy to combat the "pernicious effects of piracy". After many failures to stop piracy by technological and litigious means, Hollywood will rely on psychological tactics to thwart would-be file-swappers by making only movies that suck.
Using one-dimensional characters and predictable plots lines, movies will be so insulting to the intellect of the viewer that no one that can use a computer would bother to download them.

The MPAA has already tested the method in releases such as Baby Geniuses 2, Son of the Mask, Alone in The Dark, and Coach Carter. In a focus group of computer-literate adults, test films were able to elicit such reactions as, "Oh God, why," "I want those two hours of my life back," and "I'll be skull-fucked by imps before I ever sit through that horseshit again."
"We are sending a clear message to pirates," said MPAA Chairman Dan Glickman, "One way or another; you will pay for your crime. Your punishment may come in the form of a lawsuit, or in the mind-numbing mediocrity of Gigli, but you will be pnished.

When asked how the changes would effect box office sales, Glickman responded, "We think the success of Hilary Duff has shown there is plenty of money in releasing movies that suck." Pressed specifically about the buying power of the intellectually underdeveloped market, Glickman countered, "Are you suggesting we have overestimated the idiocy of the public?" Glickman and Glickman then snickered uncontrollably.

Hollywood will eventually only produce movies based on canceled TV series. For the near future, studios are rushing to raise the suck level in existing franchises. Ashton Kutcher will replace Toby McGuire as Peter Parker in Spider-man 3. The film rights to The Hobbit have been wrestled from Peter Jackson and given to George Lucas. In addition, Joel Schumacher will direct and star in all future films from Pixar Animation Studios.

Moonrise Film Fest

Following last year’s successful launch, The Moonrise Film Festival will once more be held at the Gateway Mall on August 19 and 20. This year, more than a dozen films on Philippine environment and culture will be featured during this highly educational and entertaining two-day event. The Moonrise Film Festival aims to increase awareness and understanding of the Philippines, the state of its environment, its people, and its history. Its main goal is to fast –track and facilitate environmental awareness among Filipinos by means of effective education and communication through visual media. It also serves as a venue for the advancement of environmental and socially-relevant films and for the viewing and dissemination of such work. It is a celebration of the beauty of the Philippines and at the same time a reflection on environmental issues that the country is facing today.

This year’s films in competition for different Citations and Awards highlight topics on biodiversity, local arts and culture, indigenous peoples, environmental issues and much more. Films with reference to environmental issues from other countries or on a global scale and films in non-documentary formats will be screened as part of the festival exhibition.

To sustain the Moonrise Film Festival’s mission and to bring the documentaries to a wider audience, the Moonrise Road Tour brings the films to schools, communities and other public places like bars and concert venues all over the Philippines.

The Moonrise Film Festival is spearheaded by the Center for Environmental Awareness and Education in partnership with Ford Motor Conservation and Environmental Grants.

The Center for Environmental Awareness and Education (CEAE) is a leader in environmental education and environmental awareness initiatives in the Philippines. CEAE offers the internationally-acclaimed Project Learning Tree (PLT) and Project Water Education for Teacher (WET) workshops, which aim to facilitate environmental learning through engaging, innovative, and interdisciplinary activities. CEAE also holds the annual Philippine Educators for the Environment Conference.

A Hodge-Podge Day in the Life of 4A

This is how conversations and law school recitations go for seniors the morning of their theses deadline.

Minutes before our first Civ Law Review class (we've had two weeks' worth of free cuts):

Lem (writes on the board): Lecture na lang kasi sabog tayo
Sep (reacts): Dapat pagpasok nya, lahat tayo mukhang pagod!
Sarj: (hyena laugh)
Titit: Baket?! Mukha naman tayong pag... Sarj! Tama na kakatawa!

~~

Lem: Sabihin na lang natin pag natawag tayo, Sir, I can only give you jibber jabber! Do you accept or not accept?!?!?!?! (with characteristic Lem hand movements and emphasis)
Sarj: Ako, sir, deal? Or no deal?!

~~

Prof: Aside from these fertilizer, what are the other types of immovables?
Kiko: Sir, basically, Manresa...
Abi (in a whisper): Si Manresa? Immovable?

~~

Jack: So, what's this subsection 2 of section 26?
Iya: Sir, the Court said...

Wikipedia on Bonnie Bailey

Bonnie Bailey grew up in Glen Cove, Long Island, New York. She caught the singing bug when she was 4. By 16 she wrote her first handful of songs and brought them to Cove City Sound Studio. There she met Grammy Award producer Ric Wake. Impressed by her ambition and voice, he decided he would take her under his wing and guide her. Bonnie's first album, St Marks Place, was her alternative rock baby, influenced by Hole, Pixies, Ani Difranco, PJ Harvey, and Nirvana. Her first gig was on the Intrepid for Fleet Week, opening for Joan Jett in front of 14,000 sailors. Bonnie performed in most New York clubs such as The Bitter End, Mercury Lounge, and The Elbow Room.

As time progressed, Bonnie's personal style of music evolved. With this evolution she needed a new music partner and producer. She found herself back at Cove City Recording studio seeking suggestions. Bonnie was then introduced to Eric Kupper. Together they recorded an album and, after submitting a track for a Hed Kandi compilation, Mark Doyle signed Bonnie to Hed Kandi.

In 2005, Bonnie had her first top 40 Billboard hit in the UK with the dance song "Everywhere". The music video went to number 1 on the MTV dance charts and made number 7 for the years countdown in DJ magazine. She toured the UK and Spain performing in venues such as El Divino, Ibiza and Pacha, London. From 2003–2005, Bonnie made many appearances on Hed Kandi compilations, including the global house hit "Ever After" from the album Hed Kandi: Beach House 04.04. She can also be found on *69 "Cafeteria" a compilation put out by Peter Rauhofer and Stonebridges Smash Album.
Mark Doyle, one of the creators of Hed Kandi, left to start his own company, Tokyo Disco. Bonnie Bailey will release her album Sweet Dysfunction with Tokyo Project by the fall of 2006. The album is singer/songwriter based written mostly on guitar and produced with Eric Kupper's electronic accents.

Lyrics:
Three years ago, our journey began
Chasing down this road, no plan in hand
Just your pulse, my racing guide in the dark
Just knowing with conviction from the start

The moment your eyes made an introduction
I felt my second violent breath of life
Flawless to the point of being godly
Yet I fell hard for your imperfections

And now we're slightly weathered, we're slightly worn
Our hands grip together, eye to eye through the storm,
yet I still believe in ever after with you, yeahhhhh
Cuz life is a pleasure with you by my side,
And there ain't no current in this river we can't ride
I still believe in ever after with you

Nothing compares to the good times
Feels like we're floating, when the rest have to climb
You made me believe in love, and not the perfect kind
A real messy beautiful twisted sunshine

Emotions, volcanic eruptions
We both still care, so we're still alive
Tunnel vision, determination
I want you, I want to make it right

And now we're slightly weathered, we're slightly worn
Our hands grip together, eye to eye through the storm,
yet I still believe in ever after with you, yeahhhhh
Cuz life is a pleasure with you by my side,
And there ain't no current in this river we can't ride
I still believe in ever after with you

You are my twisted sunshine
You are my twisted sunshine

And now we're slightly weathered, we're slightly worn
Our hands grip together, eye to eye through the storm,
yet I still believe in ever after with you, yeahhhhh
Cuz life is a pleasure with you by my side,
And there ain't no current in this river we can't ride
I still believe in ever after with you
